Dampness: The Hidden Pattern We Don’t Talk About (But Every Mom Feels)

Lately, I’ve been hearing it over and over again—from clients, messages, mini-intakes, and mamas everywhere:

“I just feel so heavy.”
“I can’t think straight to save my life.”
Everything feels stuck!”

What you’re describing isn’t laziness. It’s not depression. And it’s definitely not all in your head, either.

In Chinese Medicine, there’s a name for this feeling: Dampness.

And it’s one of the most common patterns I see in postpartum women—especially in Summer, especially when stress is high, and especially when your Qi has been on empty for too long.

What is Dampness, really?

Dampness is what happens when the body can’t metabolize fluids, emotions, or experiences efficiently. Things don’t move. They don’t get digested. They get stored.

And in the postpartum body, where Spleen Qi (digestion, clarity, structure) and Kidney Yang (warmth, movement, vitality) are already vulnerable, this stagnation hits hard.

What Dampness Feels Like (In Real Life):

  • Bloating and digestive discomfort, even when eating “healthy”

  • Afternoon crashes, early bedtimes, and never waking refreshed

  • Swelling, puffiness, or heaviness in the limbs or lower body

  • Brain fog, indecision, and emotional reactivity

  • That “underwater” feeling—like you can’t quite reach the surface

  • Cloudy urine, sluggish elimination, and erratic appetite

  • Feeling flat, stuck, and just not like yourself

Mini Case Snapshots from This Month in My Practice (real women, real imbalances):

Rachel B:
Started motherhood with low reserves. Without nourishment, rest, or rhythm, her Spleen collapsed. Now, food stagnates, Damp rises, and she crashes by 3pm every day. Foggy mind. Bloated belly. Overwhelmed by the smallest shift.

Rachel C:
Entered this pregnancy already depleted. With a history of trauma, POTS, and Endo, her Spleen and Kidneys were shot. She’s dealing with hydronephrosis, cloudy urine, fluid retention, emotional paralysis, and digestive distress. We’re slowly restoring warmth, draining Damp, and rebuilding her core.

Sarah:
Her Dampness came from emotional stagnation, overwork, and mental exhaustion. It’s not just in the gut—it’s in her mind, her mood, and her sense of self. We’re addressing it through routine, nourishment, and herbal support that helps her lift out of the mud.

How to Clear Dampness and Rebuild Your Lightness

Eat Warm, Cooked Foods
Cold, raw, or hard-to-digest meals are Dampness’s best friend. Focus on broths, stews, congees, and gently cooked veggies.
Avoid smoothies, salads, iced drinks, or constant snacking.

Choose Damp-Transforming Foods:

  • Cooked leafy greens (collards, kale, dandelion)

  • Barley, adzuki beans, fennel, ginger, scallions

  • Bone broth, egg yolks, wild-caught fish

  • Avoid: dairy, sugar, gluten, cold drinks, and overly greasy foods

Drink this Simple Tea:
Ginger-Rose-Dang Gui Tea
– 3 slices fresh ginger
– 1 tsp dried rose petals
Steep in hot water for 10–15 mins.
– add 1 full dropper of Dang Gui (my favorite way to take it)
Sip in the afternoon slump.

Move Damp with Gentle Daily Movement
Think: walking, qigong, patting the Liver meridian (sides of the body), gentle stretching, and keeping your body warm. Not HIIT. Not depletion.
